Wrestling Roundup 2023-24 #1 12-5-23

Updated on 01/04/2024

The C.B. South Wrestling Team opened their season at the Pottstown Invitation. The team entered 10 of the 13 weight classes in the varsity field.  A strong day 1 performance where the team came out hot, winning 13 of 15 individual bouts (9 by pinfall), left the team sitting in 2nd place.  On a very long 12 hour Day 2, the team slipped a bit going 18-14 and finished the tournament in 4th place.

Senior Jake Neill (145lb) and Sophomores John Shields(133lb) & Vince Mokos (114lb) went 3-1 on the weekend to finish in 2 place in their brackets. Zach Thomas (Sr/121lb) bounced back from a loss in the semifinals to win 3rd going 4-1. Peter Carmody (Sr.) placed 5th in the 160lb bracket with a 4-2 record while JP Kervatt-Dawson (Sr./127lb) & Hashim Afridi (Fr./107lb) ended in 7th place

The coaching staff is pleased with the progress the JV squad is making, especially with so many competing in their first matches ever. Collectively, JV went 31-25 with 16 pins.

Next competition: JV competes Dec. 9th at the Quakertown JV Round Robin.

Wrestling Roundup 2023-24 #2  12-18-23

Updated on 01/04/2024

This past Saturday, the Wrestling team competed in their 1st duals of the season competing at the Travis Manion Duals at LaSalle HS.  The team opened the day with an extremely lackluster effort against District 2’s Dallas HS dropping 7 of 11 bouts by rolling over & getting pinned. Round 2 fared little better as the Titans again giving up bonus points in all 6 losing bouts cost the team a win falling by 2pts to fell to Warwick HS (Dist.3).

It seemed the team had righted the ship taking an early lead 30-12 lead against Northeast High, however the NE Vikings rattled off 4 straight pinfall victories to take a 35-30 lead with one individual bout remaining. Luckily for the CB South, Freshman Brayden Masten (114lb) was able to step in and step up to secure a 2nd period Fall for his 1st high school win and earning the Titans 1st Dual win of the season.  Round 4 was a fun and unique experience getting to wrestle on a mat placed in LaSalle’s Auditorium decorated with numerous lit Christmas trees and other festive decorations.  Even better was the blowout win over Philly’s George Washington and the sound of the referee’s hand slapping the mat for 6 CBS pins.

In the final dual of the day against SOL member William Tennent, the team clawed back from an early 12-27 deficit.  Sr. Kieran Padgett who bumped up to Heavyweight and earned a lightning quick 29second pin got the rally started.  Next came freshman Nolan Traczykiewicz (107lb) getting a pin in his 1st ever varsity match.  The Pin-fest continued as B.Masten (Fr./121lb), JP Kervatt-Dawson (Sr./127lb) & John Shields (So./133lb) all dominated their opponents.

  • Rd.1: Dallas 54 - C.B.South 15
  • Rd.2: Warwick 38 - C.B.South 36
  • Rd.3: C.B.South 36 - Northeast 35
  • Rd.4: C.B.South 57 - George Washington 17
  • Rd.5: C.B.South 42 - William Tennent 33

The OW (Outstanding Wrestler) of the day goes to John Shields (So./133lb). John went 5-0 with 5 pins to up his season individual record to 8-1.  Other solid individual performers were on the day were Jake Neill (Sr./139lb) going 4-1 (4pins) while Peter Carmody (Sr./160), JP Kervatt-Dawson (Sr./127lb), and B.Masten (Fr./114lb) ended with 3 wins.

Next competition: T-he team travels to the highly competitive Trojan Wars at Chambersburg HS on Dec.29th & 30th where they will battle 49 teams from 6 different states.

Wrestling Roundup 2022-23 #3  1-5-24

Updated on 01/04/2024

Over the Christmas break, The wrestling team capped of the 1st third of the season at the always tough Trojan Wars out in Chambersburg.  Led by Sr. Capt. 139lb. Jake Neill, who was our lone medalist.  Jake placed 3rd in this 51 team tournament.  Soph. John Shields (133lb) knocked off the #2 seed but fell one match shy of the podium with his loss in the blood round.  Sr. Peter Carmody  (160lb) and Soph. Michael Kobithen (152lb) went 3-2.  In JV action: 145lb, Aiden Ertwine earned 2nd, while Nathan Cox (Fr./127) 4th & Andrew Schaeffer (So./139) finished 5th going 3-1.

This past Wednesday, the team began SOL Colonial competition with a way too narrow of a win against district rival CB West.  Your Titans eked out a 33-28 victory winning 7 of the 13 bouts in front of a home crowd of around 300.  The dual opened with South wrestling getting big bonus points (3pins & a forfeit) in  of the first 6 matches.  Kieran Padgett (Sr./215) bumped up to Heavyweight (285lbs) and got a 3 period pin. Next up was Hashim Afridi (Fr./107) who followed win his own takedown to back pin in the middle of the 3rd.  Zach Thomas (Sr./121/Capt.) kept the pins coming with a mean powerful half nelson with 10 sec to in the first period. JP Kervatt-Dawson (Sr./127) picked up a forfeit. The South coaches played a little strategy and forfeited the 133lbs weight-class in order to bump John Shields upto the next weight. Shields & Capt. Peter Carmody both earned decisions at 139 & 160 respectively.  The Titans held a narrow 30-28 lead over the Bucks heading into the winner take all final bout at 189lbs. (a decision is worth 3 team points)  Marco Ott (Jr./189) stepped up with the dual in his hands, took a single leg knock-back td for a come-from-behind 4-3 lead with about a min to go.  Ott demonstrated great savvy riding out his opponent with a few mat returns and the cunning use of the OOB line for the individual and team W’s!!

Next competition: This Saturday (1/6) at the Rock Yard Dual hosted by CR North 8:30am & next Wed. (1/10) Home vs league foe, Souderton 6:30pm.
